Chilmark Race
Chilmark is the name of a small rural fishing town, located on the Island of Martha's Vineyard in the Dukes County, which is a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The town is known for its friendly people, rustic natural scenery, and fishing. The town has the perfect combination of hills for hiking, rustic natural scenery, and a beautiful coastline. One can spend quality time with nature here and enjoy and leave all the stress of daily life behind.
One of the most important events held in this place is the Chilmark Road Race. The race is conducted on the 2nd Saturday of August, every year. The course length is 5 kilometers; it starts at Middle Road, which is 3.1 miles away from the town hall and the race ends at Beetlebung Corner, which is near the Chilmark town hall. The race takes one through the beautiful hills and nature of Chilmark and so is also known locally as the Beautiful but Oh so hilly race. The race is limited to 1500 runners and every year, Chilmark residents, summer visitors, and others take part in the race. Over the years, it has evolved into a family affair where entire families meet up every year to run together and have fun. All proceeds from the race goes to the Chilmark Community Centre.
The 33rd Annual Chilmark Road Race took place on August 2010 on a warm and windy day. The mood was happy and joyful and the race started; 16 minutes and 23 seconds later, Mr. Louis Serafini, a Boston College student from NY, was the first contestant to reach the finish line. The first female contestant to finish was Anne Preisig, a 42 year old from Falmouth, who finished the race in 18 minutes 34 seconds. The oldest runner was 84 year old Edward Leonard, who managed to finish the course in 1 hour and 20 minutes. And the youngest contestants to finish first was Casey O Brien, who came all the way from New York to compete and finished the race in 24 minutes. Another noteable contestant of the race was Steven Bingaman, a 53 year old native resident of Chilmark.
Steve w bingamanmanaged to finish the entire course in duration of 21 minutes and 5 seconds, He came 68th among the registered 1500; and amongst the 129 registered people of his age group (50-59), he ranked 7th.
It took a few hours for all the other contestants to finish the race. The environment was happy and fun and the 33rd version of the Chilmark Road Race finally ended.
